Gaby Hoffmann Career

Childhood acting career

Hoffmann began acting in commercials when he was four years old to help pay his family’s bills. Field of Dreams, her first film, was released in 1989, and she co-starred with Kevin Costner. Uncle Buck, released in 1989, starred John Candy and up-and-coming child star Macaulay Culkin.

However, she grew tired of the rigors of screen acting and took a break. Nonetheless, when she learned that Culkin (who she despised when they worked together) was making a lot of money in feature films, her “competitive spirit got the best of her,” as she later put it, and she re-entered the industry.

She appeared in This Is My Life (1992), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and The Man Without a Face (1994) with Tom Hanks. According to Hoffmann, the positive feedback she received for her performance in This Is My Life inspired her to pursue a full-time acting career in Hollywood because it gave her the confidence she needed to handle major roles.

Hoffmann starred in her own sitcom Someone Like Me (on NBC) in 1994, about a young girl named Gaby and her dysfunctional family. Hoffmann promoted it by appearing on late-night talk shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman. Despite being well-received, the series only lasted six episodes.

Following Someone Like Me, Hoffmann landed the lead role opposite Shelley Long in Freaky Friday, a 1995 TV remake of the 1976 film of the same name starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris.

Hoffmann appeared in the coming-of-age feature film Now and Then the same year as Freaky Friday, playing Young Samantha, Demi Moore’s childhood counterpart. Hoffmann portrayed Andrea Eagerton in the CBS television film Whose Daughter Is She? in 1995.

Teen and college years: 1996–2003

Between 1996 and 2001, Hoffmann landed roles in several films including Everyone Says I Love You (1996), Volcano (1997), Snapped (1998), The Hairy Bird (1998), 200 Cigarettes (1999), Coming Soon (1999), Black & White (1999), You Can Count on Me (2000), and Perfume (2001).

Theatre work in New York: 2003–2007

Between 2003 and 2007, Hoffmann was primarily focused on a theatrical career in New York. 24 Hour Plays (as Denise at the American Airlines Theatre), The Sugar Syndrome (Williamstown Theatre Festival – July/August 2005), and Third (Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater/Lincoln Center Theater – September – December 2005) were among the roles she has played. She appeared in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent in late 2005.

She also appeared in the Broadway play Suburbia, alongside Kieran Culkin and Jessica Capshaw, at New York City’s Second Stage Theatre on 43rd Street from September to October 2006. Hoffmann then returned to 24 Hours Plays, where she co-starred with Jennifer Aniston.

Return to film work: 2007–present

Hoffmann has gradually returned to film acting since 2007. She appeared in the 2007 film Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of America. Guest of Cindy Sherman, a documentary about art-scene commentator Paul Hasegawa-relationship Overacker’s with enigmatic photographer Cindy Sherman, aired in 2008.

From 1984 to 1999, Sherman was married to Hoffman’s stepfather, Michel Auder. Later that year, Hoffmann appeared in the documentary Chelsea on the Rocks, a tribute to her childhood home, the Chelsea Hotel. The documentary, directed by Abel Ferrara, highlights the many personalities and artistic voices that have emerged from the legendary residence.

Hoffmann appeared in Todd Solondz’s Life During Wartime and Mickey Rourke’s thriller 13 in 2009. (released in 2010). Hoffmann most recently appeared in Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus alongside Michael Cera (2013).

She and Cera took mescaline for her performance in a climactic scene while filming in Chile. In Season 3, she appeared as a guest star on the television shows Louie and Girls. Hoffmann also appeared in Girls seasons 4 and 5.

In 2013, she finished filming the lead role in Lyle, a Web series created by Stewart Thorndike and Jill Soloway. It was filmed in New York City. She later moved into an apartment in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood.

In October 2013, she starred in “The First March,” a 1910s installment of Vanity Fair’s The Decades Series directed by Gilly Barnes. Hoffmann has spoken about her full-frontal nude scenes in several projects, including Crystal Fairy, Girls, and the Amazon series Transparent. “People are obsessed with actresses being hairless, fatless Barbie dolls,” Hoffmann said of nudity.

They can’t imagine anyone wanting to be anything other than that. When they are, it is viewed almost as a political statement. Consider Lena Dunham. She is a stunning woman, and everyone is praising her for being so brave as to show herself naked, which I find completely condescending and ridiculous. No one would call Angelina Jolie brave if she appeared naked onscreen.

The implication is that Lena is brave because she doesn’t look like she should. That, in my opinion, is a pity.” After seeing Hoffmann’s performance on Louis C.K.’s third season of Louie, Jill Soloway wrote the role she plays in Transparent for her.

In 2016, she appeared in the video as an onstage “stand-in” for Australian singer Sia Furler’s song “Unstoppable” during her Nostalgic For the Present concert tour.
