A young man jumped off the building before it collapsed, according to rumours on the day of the collapse. There has been much speculation about how he managed to escape the incident that claimed many lives, and where he is today.

A young man named Williams Nwachukwu recently gave an interview to Guardian Nigeria, in which he revealed a lot about himself.

Originally from Mbasie, Imo State, Williams is a 19-year-old. Despite graduating from secondary school, he could not continue his education due to a lack of funds. In order to seek greener pastures, he traveled to Lagos, leaving his parents and siblings behind. Upon arriving in Lagos in January 2021, he managed to get a position with the building contractor who was responsible for the collapsed project. It was revealed in his interview that he lived and worked in the collapsed 21-storey building. There is nowhere for him to stay in Lagos State. Approximately three times a week, he worked for 3500 nairas a day.

In the moments before the building collapsed, he was sleeping on the 4th floor and was startled by the vibrations. He noticed this and jumped to safety from the fourth floor, not the tenth floor as reported by the media. He remained uninjured due to the grace of God. His health status was followed up by the Lagos State government following the incident. Furthermore, he said that he has contacted members of his family who have agreed to visit him in Lagos.
