According to the Commanding Officer, Naval Outpost Onitsha, Adekunle Okeniyi, the attack occurred during a gun duel with people who were described as suspected IPOB members in the state.

The captain of the official Nigerian navy, Okeniyi, alleged that six alleged IPOB members were killed in the gunfight, and others were seriously injured.

The following excerpt is from the Naval Outpost Onitsha statement entitled, “Statement by the Naval Outpost Onitsha regarding the fake news” dated 10th August, 2021. “According to some false publications, two Naval personnel were killed at Awkuzu, in Anambra State, during a gun duel with suspected Indigenous People of Biafra, on the 9th August 2021.”

“During the gun duel, none of our personnel were injured, and the Naval Outpost Onitsha strongly denies this fake news.”

“Rather, the troops fought valiantly and repelled the attack, which resulted in the deaths of six suspected IPOB members while others were seriously injured.

In the interests of clarity, the Naval Outpost Onitsha directs the general public to disregard this fake news and suggests that it should be stopped immediately.”

News making the rounds in Onitsha said six heavily built unknown gunmen driving a Hilux van and a new Highlander SUV were attacked by the Naval personnel in Awkuzu while trying to open the boot of their cars. They replied calmly, killing three of the Marines.
