Citizens of Mwanga village, Chuka area are still reeling in shock, after a 45-year old man hacked his wife to death, Thursday night, and then strived to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a sharp knife.

Peter Murithi, slashed his wife Esther Kina, 30, severing her neck with a sharp panga at around 4:30 pm that happened in the remote village of Tharaka-Nithi County.

Residents claim that the man committed the act while his house was surrounded by people, among them the area chief.

Police had a hard time breaking the bedroom door where the two were lying in a pool of blood with the wife already dead and the husband unconscious.

Confirming the incident, Mwonge Chief David Mwamba said the two had quarreled over domestic misunderstandings before the husband committed the heinous act inside their house.

The chief said he received a call from a resident informing him that Murithi was threatening to kill his wife and take his life and that he had already poured petrol into the house.
He rushed to the scene and found the accused outside the house holding a panga and knife while naked.

He said he pleading with him not to commit the crime but insisted that he will kill the wife and commit suicide by torching the house while inside.

“He told me that the police will collect the burnt bodies of the two,” said Mr. Mwamba.

He said that after realizing that he could not change his mind nor the neighbors could, he called the police and when he saw them, he rushed to the house and clasped the door from inside, and committed the crime.
